Police have identified the man killed in a hit-and-run in Patchogue Sunday morning as 32-year-old Marco Castro.
Suffolk police say it happened just before 4 a.m. as Castro was walking north on Ocean Avenue near Roe Boulevard.
Family members say he has lived on the island for 15 years and worked in construction.
They say they don't know why he was out at that hour, but that Saturday was his 32nd birthday.
It's believed Castro was walking in the street because some sidewalks in the area were not cleared of snow.
Carrie Davis, who lives across from the accident scene, says her security cameras didn't catch the crash. She adds a street light in the area was out and speeding cars may not have seen the man.
While family members mourn, they hope detectives can find the driver who did this to hopefully bring them to justice.
Suffolk County police are asking the public with any information to call 1-800-222-TIPS.
