A two-car crash early Saturday morning in West Islip left one person dead and another seriously hurt.
Police say the collision occurred on Route 231 and Union Boulevard just before 2:30 a.m.
According to Suffolk police, a vehicle carrying five people traveling westbound on Union Boulevard lost control and sideswiped another vehicle carrying two people.
The crash brought down power lines and snapped two utility poles, according to authorities.
Neighbors told News 12 that they witness many drivers speeding down Route 231.
"It's sad someone lost their life, but they speed all the time on Route 231 and John Street. People need to slow down and respect life," said a resident.
Police have not yet released the names of those involved in the crash or the circumstances leading up to it.
