Police say that a deceased Merrick woman was bound and died of asphyxiation.
Authorities say Suzanne Goldfarb, 48, was found by her father Wednesday after he had come to check on her at the cottage she rented behind a Smith Street home.
Nassau Police Chief Kevin Smith says "there was an indication that she was bound," but did not release any more details about the investigation.
Smith says Goldfarb worked as a nanny and had lived in the cottage for about five years. He says it's unlikely that the death was a random incident since there was no forced entry or break-in.
Some friends and neighbors told News 12 Long Island that Goldfarb had been through a few "bad breakups."
Detectives are now trying to determine if the death was a homicide.
Anyone with information about the woman's death is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
