When officers arrived, one officer used his patrol car to sideswipe them. Calderon was knocked to the ground, with the weapon out of their hand, and police made the arrest.
Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder told News 12 the officer was following protocol.
Ryder says the officer told him he did not fire his weapon because if he missed, there were people standing behind the suspect.
“The officer made a sound decision, a very good decision, and because of it, they saved the lives of himself, others and the person with that gun” Ryder says.
Calderon has been charged with a number of crimes including criminal possession of a weapon, two counts of menacing a police officer and three counts of menacing in the third degree.
No serious injuries were reported.
Ryder says the suspect had two prior arrests in New York City from June for burglary and trespassing.
Calderon will be arraigned when medically practical.
The officer who struck them is still out on sick leave.
