Police: Worker dead after being buried underneath dirt in Head of the Harbor construction accident

Suffolk County police tell News 12 a masonry company was installing cesspool rings when the worker went into the hole to level the ring. That's when the excavated dirt collapsed into the hole.

Police say a construction worker has died after being buried underneath soil Monday in Head of the Harbor.

Head of the Harbor Police Chief Chuck Lohmann says around 100 first responders were on Piper Lane during an attempted rescue following the construction accident.

"It was a septic tank being installed on the site and it was a collapse of soil," Lohmann says.

Suffolk County police tell News 12 a masonry company was installing cesspool rings when the worker went into the hole to level the ring. That's when the excavated dirt collapsed into the hole.

The man was eventually recovered from the hole by officers with Suffolk County's emergency services unit and pronounced dead.
