An 80-year-old woman was struck and killed by a driver who fled the scene Tuesday night in Hempstead, police say.
The incident occurred just before 9 p.m. at Washington Street and Nichols Court.
Friends of the unidentified victim say she lived at a senior citizen complex just a few blocks from where she was killed.
The vehicle that left the scene of the crash was found by the Hempstead Police Department a short time later parked on the street, officials say.
No arrests have been made. Detectives are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
Crossing Guard Shirley Cunningham said she was heartbroken after learning about the incident. She says she saw the victim every day.
"I'm going to miss her. That's all I can say," she told News 12.
