Six people were injured after a dump truck drove into a tractor-trailer and then through the side of a Target store in North Bergen on 71st Street and Tonnelle Avenue where people customers were shopping.
Officials say Friday afternoon, shortly before 2:30 p.m., the large dump truck was being loaded with soil and rocks at the top of the hill on 71st Street facing the side of Target building. Then, it was seen speeding down the hill
North Hudson Fire Chief David Donnarumma told News 12, "The driver apparently lost control of the vehicle or his breaks, went through Tonnelle Avenue, crashed into the back of a tractor-trailer and then went into the Target store."
Fire officials say one woman became trapped in the store's restroom. Emergency teams got her out but say she is being treated for severe injuries.
The dump truck driver had to be removed from the vehicle. Police say if it hadn't hit the rear of the tractor-trailer before crashing into Target, the incident could have been a lot worse.
They say the dump truck will be inspected as part of the investigation.
Fire officials report significant damage to the structure of the building and say the sprinkler system went off, causing water damage in the store.
It was unclear when the Target will reopen.
Police haven't said how many people were in the store at the time. But emergency teams went back inside after the truck was removed to make sure everyone was accounted for.
