Suffolk police tell News 12 that a 36-year-old died of a "sharp force injury" in Jamesport.
Police said officers responded to Herricks Lane on Monday at 11:43 p.m. and when they got there, they found Conrad Gowan, a home health aide, with the injury.
He was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center where police said he was pronounced dead.
Police haven't said exactly how Gowan's injury happened or who may be responsible.
According to Suffolk police, the Herricks Lane home where Gowan was found is on the same property as the North Fork Nursery.
No one there wanted to speak on camera with News 12's crew on the scene.
People in the area said they hope an arrest is made and quickly.
One woman said, "I'm horrified that it happens in our local community, where such things usually don't happen."
Suffolk detectives are asking anyone with information to call the Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
Police said all calls will be kept confidential.
