Police say one person is dead following a home invasion in Coram.
Multiple people broke into the home at 5 Everglades Lane around 3:45 a.m. Thursday, authorities say.
Police say they shot Eric Westby, a resident of the home, and struck a female resident with a pistol.
Westby, 46, was transported to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson where he was pronounced dead. The female was treated for her injuries at a hospital.
There were two other residents home at the time of the burglary, but they were not injured.
According to Suffolk Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison, the attack was targeted.
"It looks like this location was definitely targeted for some kind of narcotics," Harrison says.
Det. Lt. Kevin Beyrer says the three people who were alive were taken into one room where money was demanded.
He says at least four burglars made their way through the home, taking money and possibly drugs.
Police say the intruders fled in an unknown direction.
Neighbors tell News 12 off camera that the home has had problems for years and they reported it to police.
Others say they are worried for their safety.
"It's scary because people have kids over here," says Vinny Ayres, of Coram.
No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
Detectives are asking anyone with information on this incident to call the Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
