Two suspects in a dump truck plowed through the Macy's entrance of the Smith Haven Mall in an effort to steal an ATM, police say.
The incident occurred at the Lake Grove mall at around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.
A cab driver who picks up a mall employee each night at around 11:30 p.m. happened to be in the mall parking lot at the time of the alleged burglary. He told News 12 that he noticed two men loading an ATM into their vehicle.
He told News 12 that the thieves spotted him and chased his cab through the lot in an attempt to ram him. After evading the thieves, he says he followed the truck out of the mall parking lot and called police.
"I floored it in reverse so they couldn't run into me, then I spun the cab around where I was able to get behind them," the cabbie told News 12.
The cab driver told News 12 that police chased the suspects to a dead end street where one of the suspects was apprehended. The other suspect is still on the loose.
Police say the investigation into the incident is still active. They found the ATM machine, which was still in the back of the dump truck. It's unclear how much cash was in the machine or how much had been taken.
