Plainview-Old Bethpage residents will have a chance Tuesday to vote on a $114 million school bond that, if approved, would increase their school tax bills by an average of $549 a year.

School Superintendent Mary O'Meara tells News 12 the money would be used to build new classrooms, a gym, expanded cafeteria and more at Plainview-JFK High School, as well as new classrooms at Judy Jacobs Parkway Elementary. It would also be used for infrastructure projects like roof replacements at school buildings across the district.

A second proposition would borrow money to build new classrooms at Jamaica Avenue school.

Students who worked on the proposals describe crowded classrooms and congested hallways that make it difficult to get where they need to go. O'Meara says enrollment is up 9.5% since 2018.

The vote takes place from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Jamaica Avenue school and the Mattlin Middle School offices.
