Police say a plumber is accused of stealing a solid brass tabernacle and scrap metal from a Uniondale church.

Police say Peter Vignona, 53, of Bay Shore, removed items from St. Pius Church on Front Street.

According to police, Vignona was working as a plumber at the church last Wednesday when he allegedly took the items and sold them for profit.

According to the Town of Hempstead, Vignona and his employer were not licensed to do plumbing work in the town.

The Bay Shore man is facing two felony grand larceny charges. In court, Vignona's public defender pleaded not guilty for him. The judge ordered him held on $25,000 bail. If convicted, Vignona faces up to seven years in prison.
