Dozens of 18th century gravestones have returned to their former glory thanks to a local nonprofit in Suffolk County.

Friends of Lakeview Cemeteries cleared away invasive weeds and heavy overgrowth at Patchogue’s Waverly Cemetery.

Waverly Cemetery was established in 1793 and is one of the oldest resting places in the county.

The organization’s hard work revealed 100 historic gravestones nearly lost to time.

The nonprofit highlighted the accomplishment in their 2025 annual report documenting milestones and community impact.
