Change is coming to Patchogue after a 2-year-old girl was fatally struck by a pickup while walking with her mother.
Patchogue Mayor Paul Pontieri created the Be Safe Be Seen program through which the town gives out reflector vests to protect pedestrians and bicyclists.
“Sometimes it’s easier to change behaviors than it is to change the system,” Pontieri says.
Over 1,300 reflector vests have been donated from private businesses, nonprofits, unions and service organizations.
“If we can prevent anyone from getting hurt, that’s what counts here,” says Sen. Mario Mattera.
Luis Chacon’s husband was hit by a car in November and is still in critical condition.
She says she wants to see more being done because there’s not a lot of lights on the street.
Sen. Alexis Weik says adding streetlights or stoplights to Route 112 is being considered to make sure that they are being maximized for the most amount of safety.
“We want to make sure that we don’t leave any stone unturned because pedestrian safety is No. 1,” Weik says.
The Patchogue Police Department says it has seen more people out wearing vests since distribution started.
Anyone who wants a vest can head to Town Hall, the police department or the library.
