Parents, students and Pelham Gardens residents plan to rally Thursday against plans to building a high school on the JHS 144 playground.
The Department of Education is planning to build temporary classrooms in the school yard to house students from the Sports Professions High School. Parents claim building the school will leave their children with no place to play and will overcrowd the school. Some parents also worry mixing older kids with younger kids could lead to bullying and fights.
According to the Daily News, education officials agree it is a difficult situation but say JHS 144 is an appropriate site for the high school. Education officials say high school students will only attend classes on the JHS 144 campus until 2008.
