Parents and firefighters are calling for changes in emergency procedure after they say North Bellmore School District officials mishandled two gas leaks.
Parents spoke out at a school board meeting against the protocols employed by the school after a second gas leak in three days forced a full evacuation. Dozens of attendees expressed outrage that parents and the fire department were not immediately notified and that the school was not evacuated after the first leak on Tuesday.
Superintendent Dominic Mucci says the proper procedure was followed and that KeySpan crews came in to examine the problem. Both the fire department and KeySpan have deemed the school safe to reopen Friday.
