Some parents in Glen Cove are concerned about mold found inside the walls of where their children were learning.
Pre-K students at Deasy Elementary School have been moved to another facility, and parents say their children have been coming home sick.
“My daughter has been complaining about her throat,” says Shakeya Webb. “She had a rash all along the side of her face. She’s had this dry cough—like barking.”
The district sent out an email to parents Sunday saying, “As the result of a leak, we were able to detect some mold issues behind our wall…We are taking precautionary measures and will need to do more extensive cleaning…We will be relocation pre-K classes to the Gribbon school…”
Parents say they believe the mold has been causing their children to get sick but claim the district has dismissed them and told them it’s “probably just allergies.”
“We asked for reports,” says Kara Mele. “They told us they’re waiting for the full report—that they only have a summary.”
On Thursday, parents say their children were sent home from school with iPads but had no idea why. Then on Sunday, they were told they would be doing remote learning before going to the Gribbon school later in the week.
This led parents to believe that the district knew about the issues before parents were told.
“We should know then and there,” says Frank DeRosa. “Not, 'OK my son is coming home on Thursday with an iPad' and then Sunday they say ‘Hey, your son’s going to a different school.’”
A spokesperson for the Glen Cove City School District tells News 12 that district officials were not contacted by any parents about these concerns. They say the timing for the iPads is just a coincidence and that’s when they were scheduled to be distributed
