A Suffolk County police officer is recovering after his vehicle was hit by an alleged drunk driver.
Officials say the police car was on the side of Pulaski Road in Huntington with its emergency lights on while the officer was working a traffic stop.
They say a 2019 Honda Accord, with 54-year-old William Macari behind the wheel, slammed into the back of the cruiser. It happened just after midnight Friday.
The officer was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.
Marcari was not injured. He has been charged with driving while intoxicated and did not offer a comment while walking out following his arraignment Friday.
Christian Rosita saw the commotion from their home.
"There were so many cars… it was 10, 15 police cars out there," says Rosita. “I saw a mangled car out there.”
