Officials say an inmate at the Nassau County Jail in East Meadow died early Wednesday.
Nassau police say a 45-year-old male inmate was found unresponsive in his cell by a correction officer at the facility located on Carmen Avenue.
The man was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.
Authorities are calling the incident “death of an undetermined nature” and say an investigation is ongoing.
The Nassau County executive's office released a statement saying, "The matter is currently under investigation, and the county executive will reserve comment until the investigation is completed."
The president of the Nassau County Correction Officers Union says that correction officers immediately responded to provide medical aid to the inmate and that the state's attorney general office, along with Nassau police, are investigating this situation.
The death announcement comes after a December hearing where a committee was looking into safety concerns at the jail.
