A house fire Saturday morning in Hempstead left 18 people displaced.
"There were 13 adults and five children. There was a family with a newborn, it's heartbreaking," says Frederic Klein of the American Red Cross of Greater New York.
The Nassau County fire marshal says the home on Front Street was illegally subdivided into multiple apartments and rental rooms.
The fire broke out inside the home at around 9:30 a.m. It took around 30 minutes to extinguish the flames. Authorities say no injuries were reported.
The Village of Hempstead Building Department was at the scene following the incident. It was not yet clear how it started.
The American Red Cross is working to help the 18 occupants get back on their feet. They were given financial assistance and other basic supplies.
