A house fire in Brentwood ignited Sunday afternoon while nine residents were inside – one of them, a child, was taken to the hospital.

Brentwood fire officials say the fire erupted in the basement of the home on Fairdale Drive. Firefighters responded to the scene just before 12:30 p.m.

Crews from Central Islip, Commack, Bay Shore, Islip, West Islip, and East Brentwood also assisted. They were able to contain the fire just after 1:30 p.m.

Fire officials say nine residents were occupying the home at the time of the fire. They say the child who was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital had high levels of carbon monoxide in the blood.

The Suffolk Arson Unit is investigating the cause of the fire.

PSEG crews were called to deal with a live wire which was secured at around 1:15 p.m.

The Red Cross was notified about the residents. The house is uninhabitable.
