A body was recovered from the Underhill Preserve in Jericho Wednesday, officials say.
Police say the human remains appear to have been present for several years.
Law enforcement says they have a preliminary identification of the victim, which will be confirmed by further testing.
An individual believed to be responsible is in law enforcement custody, police say.
The FBI and Homeland Security agents were seen combing through the woods Wednesday inside the preserve near Cedar Swamp Road. Crime scene investigators from the Nassau Police Department were also at the scene, along with the Nassau County Medical Examiner's Office and K-9 units from the state police.
Police say there is no threat to the community.
This is a developing story.
