Officials: 1 dead following raging N. Amityville fire
Officials say one person has died and three people have been injured after a North Amityville house fire.
The fire broke out around 2:30 a.m. on Albany Avenue.
Officials say that there were six residents inside the house, and that five of them escaped and one died in the fire. Two children escaped the home uninjured and were released to their mother, who was not home at the time of the fire. Two male residents of the home were transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip and will be transferred to Stony Brook University Hospital. One male resident was transported to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow.
Manuel Landaverde says the man who died was his grandfather. Three of the people rushed to the hospital are his family members as well.  Landaverde says he rushed to the house he grew up in when he heard the news.
Firefighters say the extreme cold made it more difficult to fight the flames.
The Suffolk County Fire Marshal and homicide detectives will continue to investigate the cause, but at this point they tell News 12 that it appears to be accidental.
