A student was stabbed this morning inside Edward R. Murrow High School in Midwood, the NYPD says.
The NYPD has confirmed that a person of interest is now in custody in connection to the stabbing of a 15-year-old student at Edward R. Murrow High School. At this hour, law enforcement officials have not confirmed the age of the person in custody..
Police say the 15-year-old victim was stabbed in the abdomen and taken to Maimonides Medical Center. The victim is in stable condition.
News 12 sources say the incident happened on the third floor of the school.
Students remained locked down inside of the building until approximately 3:30 p.m. Students say that they were told to stay in their classrooms and were screened. News 12 spoke with parents about the way that the school handled the situation, with varying feelings on it.
"They are quick to tell you when your kid is absent, but when things like this happen they don't let you know anything," said one concerned parent.
For freshman Amanda Lawrence, she says the over five hours of lockdown with little communication was extremely stressful.
"I was stressing out, because I wanted to go home to my family," said Amanda Lawrence. Many of the parents say they were outside the school since around 10 a.m. and showed up immediately after they heard about what had taken place.
"We have no information, my daughter doesn't know when they're going to be released, she doesn't know what's going on. They just know what happened in the beginning that somebody was stabbed," said Anna, a fellow worried parent.
Mona Davis, of the New York City School Safety Coalition, says the suspect is known to the New York City Police Department School Safety Division.
The Department of Education issued a statement saying, "The safety and wellbeing of our students is our absolute top priority. Following an incident in the school, NYPD School Safety immediately responded, and NYPD and EMS are on site. The building was placed on a brief lockdown which has now been lifted."
