In November, rape cases in North Brooklyn rose 150%, compared to November 2024, according to NYPD data.

This comes as the NYPD and the city touted record breaking lows in the city for murder and shootings.

Brooklyn residents tell News 12 they aren't surprised other serious crimes statistics are up in their neighborhoods.

"I could definitely see things like assaults and things that could be swept under that are going up," said Jah, an East New York resident.

News 12 reached out to the commissioner of the Mayor's Office to End Domestic and Gender-Based Violence about these statistics. She says more advocacy for victims allows people to feel comfortable reporting.

"The more we hear reporting the more it tells us we're reaching people, we're letting them know they can report we're making reporting easier," said Saloni Sethi, commissioner of the Mayor's Office to End Domestic and Gender Based Violence.
