A 4-year-old boy was struck and killed by a vehicle while on the back of a scooter with his dad Sunday night in the Bronx, according to the NYPD.
Police say 4-year-old Mario Rosario was on the back of a stolen scooter with his father on the way home when they were hit by a car on Bailey Avenue near 193rd Street. The scooter tried to get in front of the sedan while making a turn and collided with the vehicle.
Rosario suffered severe head injuries and was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital. He was pronounced dead shortly after.
Police say the 51-year-old driver was arrested on scene for driving without a license, but the driver says his license has only been suspended for a month due to outstanding child support charges.
The driver of the car says the scooter came extremely fast when they crashed. Once the collision happened, he says the father started banging on his car screaming. According to the driver, he then jumped out of his car and tried to help the boy feeling his pulse and performing CPR.
Rosario's father will be facing charges of endangering the welfare of a child and criminal possession of stolen property. The driver has been charged for operating a vehicle with a suspended license.
