The NYPD says 13 people were arrested following a protest at the new migrant center near the Nassau County border on Wednesday night.
The “tent city” outside of Creedmoor Psychiatric Center opened to migrants days ago and is causing outrage in surrounding communities.
According to officials, the facility will house 1,000 single men.
A few hundred community members showed up and said the city needs to find a new place for the migrants to stay. Among those in attendance and arrested was Guardian Angels founder and former New York City mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa.
Some neighbors tell News 12 they would have no problem if the camp was made up of families and not just single men.
The neighbors say they are worried about the impact of having them would have on the community, especially one with seniors using SNAP services nearby.
“It’s not an anti-immigration, it’s anti-illegal immigration and this whole thing that they don’t care what happens to the neighborhoods. That’s all it is,” says Marie Lynch, of Queens.
Mayor Eric Adams’ office said in a statement, “They understand the community concerns and are working to make sure any disruptions are minimized.”
However, they add they cannot do this alone and need more federal resources.
The Nassau Coliseum has been considered as a migrant housing site, but Nassau Executive Bruce Blakeman has said that won’t happen.
“Nassau is NOT a sanctuary county! NYC welcomed this crisis and must address their own problems … and that includes pressuring President Biden to enhance border security and stop the flow of illegal migrants to our nation,” said Blakeman.
