New York Institute of Technology has suspended all of its athletic programs for at least two years due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
NYIT President Hank Foley made the shocking announcement Thursday, which will affect the Old Westbury school's 12 Division II programs, including its baseball team, which advanced to the College World Series in 2019.
Foley says despite the suspension of play, all scholarships for student-athletes will continue to be honored. Nearly 250 student-athletes are enrolled at NYIT.
"We have a rich legacy in competitive sports and are proud of everything our student-athletes have accomplished over the years. We thank everyone involved in our athletics program for their spirit, dedication, and professionalism," said Foley. "For the next two years, unfortunately, we will no longer be competing with our peers in the East Coast Conference (ECC) and NCAA Division II."
The school says it will further evaluate what comes next for its sports programs at a later date.
