The New York City Department of Transportation says it is beginning the process of launching 25 e-bike battery swapping stations citywide.
It says Downtown Brooklyn and Williamsburg are some of the locations across the city being considered with a high volume of delivery workers.
The goal is to make delivery workers' lives easier but also keep the public safe from fires caused by e-bikes. They say the stations will be equipped with things like fire suppression and system monitoring.
News 12 spoke with e-bike rider Leslie Dunning about the announcement.
“It lessens the fire hazard of people storing them improperly under poor conditions so that’s a great factor," said Dunning.
The FDNY says so far this year, there have been 249 fires caused by lithium-ion batteries, 42 injuries from those fires and one death.
