? Some New York City Council members are urging Governor George Pataki (R-NY) to ask lawmakers not to renew a measure that places 4 percent sales tax on clothing.
Governor Pataki says he wants to keep the tax in place when it expires this April. Some officials are against the tax because they say New Yorkers spend about $700 million on clothes in New Jersey each year, which has no sales tax on clothing. Councilman David Weprin claims the tax is also unfair to low-income families.
For now, Bronx residents can enjoy tax-free clothing and other items under $110 for one week starting January 30.
