A new coalition was formed with a goal of preventing the planned closure of Our Lady of Mercy Academy in Syosset.
The school is slated to shut down in June because of declining enrollment.
The OLMA Preservation Coalition is made up of parents, alumnae and community members.
Coalition President Jeanette Miller says the group has the backing of 7,700 people.
“Where there’s a will there’s a way. There’s strength in numbers and we feel empowered by that strength every day,” Miller said.
The coalition plans to hold a community town hall in the coming weeks.
Requests for comment from the school were not immediately returned Monday evening.
