The tournament, held at the Westchester Table Tennis Center in Pleasantville, features players of all ages and skill levels vying for trophies, prize money and the chance to be crowned state champions.

Sanctioned by USA Table Tennis (USATT), the national governing body for the Olympic sport, the championship includes 16 events for men, women and youth competitors.

Organizers say table tennis is a sport that can be enjoyed at any age.

"You can be ok when you're 8 or 9 years old and still be playing into your 90s," said Will Shortz of the Westchester Table Tennis Center.

About 80 competitors are expected to take part in the championship, which brings together elite athletes and rising junior stars from across New York.

Table tennis made its Olympic debut at the 1988 Summer Games in Seoul, South Korea.

The Westchester Table Tennis Center, which has been named USA Table Tennis' Club of the Year for the past four years, is considered one of the nation's premier venues for competitive table tennis and regularly hosts regional, national and international tournaments.
