Nearly four months after tax day, many Long Islanders still haven't gotten their state refunds back.

As of today, the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance says about 40,000 returns are still being processed.

State officials say the New York State Industries for the Disabled took on the job of processing paper returns this year. The state says NYSID became overwhelmed by all the returns, which is why they've been delayed.

Despite the issues, Sen. Carl Marcellino says NYSID will process 2013 returns too because no other company wants to take the job.

A state tax spokesperson says 99.5 percent of refunds for returns filed in a timely manner have been issued. The remaining are being issued in the upcoming days.

Marcellino says he will keep a close eye on the speed of next year's returns and recommends filing electronically.
