A disturbing incident unfolded at the Bayport St. Patrick’s Day Parade over the weekend when two white pickup trucks were spotted flying Confederate flags, drawing swift condemnation from the local community.
Video footage, captured by parade attendee Maria Scorcia, shows the trucks driving through the parade with Confederate flags displayed.
One of the trucks also had the logo of The Fish Store, a seafood market and restaurant located on Montauk Highway.
In the video, Scorcia can be heard questioning the store's connection to the controversial symbol, asking, "I just want to make sure you guys support slavery at the local fish store?"
Scorcia expressed her shock, saying, "I was just horrified."
In response to the backlash, The Fish Store issued a statement on Facebook, distancing itself from the incident.
The statement said, “Unfortunately it was a friend of a friend… this was not the doing of anyone from The Fish Store or Needelman Family."
However, when News 12 investigated further, it led to the discovery of the trucks at a home in Holbrook with a sign that read "The Needelmans” out front. The license plate of one of the trucks matched the one seen in the parade footage.
Attempts to speak with anyone at the home were unsuccessful, and the door was shut and blinds drawn when News 12 approached.
The Bayport-Blue Point Chamber of Commerce called the incident "embarrassing.”
Seth Needelman, owner of The Fish Store, serves as the chamber’s treasurer.
News 12 reached out to The Fish Store for additional comments, but no one was available for an interview.
