A new area code is coming soon to Suffolk County.
Starting on July 16, the 934 area code will be used alongside 631. The new code will be given to all people who get new cellphones accounts or phone lines in Suffolk County.
Ahead of the rollout, dialers will need to use 1-631 to make local calls beginning June 18. People with stored numbers in their cellphones must update their contacts to add in the area code.
The New York State Public Service Commission also recommends that Suffolk residents update all fax machines, and alarm and security systems to now include the area code.
Three digit numbers like 911 and 411 will not be affected by the change.
The 934 area code was chosen two years ago when officials realized the county was running out of available 631 numbers.
