Safety concerns are on the rise at Roosevelt Field Mall following a violent attack on a teenager this week and reports indicating a near-daily string of criminal incidents.
Police say a 17-year-old boy was assaulted Wednesday night inside the mall. The attacker, who remains at large, allegedly punched the teen multiple times in the face, head and back before fleeing the scene. Authorities have released a photo of the suspect in hopes the public can help identify him.
Nick Provenzano, a shopper from Merrick, expressed deep concern about the incident and the growing pattern of violence.
“My kids want to go to the mall — I should feel OK,” he said. “Instead, when they go to the mall, I’m actually very nervous inside.”
That nervousness is shared by many parents and mallgoers who say they no longer feel safe allowing their teenagers to visit the mall alone.
Recent police records confirm a troubling trend. On Tuesday, a shoplifting arrest was made at JCPenney. Just days earlier, on Saturday, someone reportedly stole merchandise from Dick’s Sporting Goods. These incidents are part of a steady stream of crimes that have raised alarms among shoppers.
Violent disturbances have also made headlines in the past. In December, a chaotic fight erupted inside the mall, with video capturing weapons sliding across the floor as frightened shoppers scrambled for cover. That same night, police arrested a man who allegedly attempted to enter the food court with bricks during a separate altercation.
News 12 has reached out to both Nassau County police and Roosevelt Field Mall management, but neither has commented.
