Nassau police say a 53-year-old man who was riding a motorcycle is dead after striking the rear left side of a car that was attempting to make a U-turn Sunday afternoon in Bellmore.

Authorities say the incident happened around 2 p.m. on Bellmore Avenue and Garfield Street.

The 18-year-old driver of the vehicle remained on scene.

Residents in the area said people driveway too fast on the main road.

“Now we have a little baby, and we’re so scared of our family members driving her. Everyone [is]driving so fast you can’t see anywhere. Everyone’s just winging it," said Stephanie Inzerillo, of Bellmore. "And now that somebody’s passed away, this is so heartbreaking.”

Neighbors told News 12 they want to see change after they said this wasn't the first accident they've seen on Bellmore Avenue.

“Something needs to be done, not tomorrow, today," said Annette DeSimone, of North Bellmore. "This is too important. I don’t want to see another life be lost.”

DeSimone said she started a petition for a traffic light to be installed on Bellmore Avenue and Cleveland Street.

The nearest traffic light is by Jerusalem and Newbridge avenues, which spans about a quarter of a mile.

Police have identified the man as David Kruger.
