The Nassau County Legislature will hold its first meeting of the year Wednesday after a six-week power struggle that prevented members from discussing any new legislation.

One controversial timing-based topic includes giving lawmakers an annual cost-of-living pay raise. The salary of a Nassau County legislator has been $39,500 annually since the legislature was formed 10 years ago. Newly re-elected Presiding Officer Judy Jacobs says now might not be the time to discuss the issue, but adds it is something that deserves attention.

Critics argue that lawmakers have been getting paid for weeks despite doing very little, if any work. They say the legislators must first prove to Nassau County taxpayers that they deserve a pay increase.
