In the wake of the death of George Floyd, a call has been renewed to equip Nassau County police officers with body cameras.
Nassau Legislator Siela Bynoe has written letters to County Executive Laura Curran, asking for her to look into outfitting county officers with the cameras, which have been adopted by many major police agencies worldwide.
In Nassau, only a small test program for body cameras was approved in 2015, but in the end was never implemented.
Curran says she has seen the letter and will discuss the idea with the police and officers union.
"We have a very strong tradition here in Nassau County of working hard to build trust between communities and the police," says Curran. "And we are looking, we were very open, I'm very open to anything that can continue to build that trust. So we're speaking with the unions, we're speaking with the legislators and we're looking at everything."
Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder says he is open to discussion about the idea of body cameras, but that they would need strict rules for their implementation and use to protect officers and the public.
