A new service is available along part of Nassau County’s South Shore.
The service is an on-demand door-to-door service, similar to Uber or Lyft but with small buses.
Long Islanders can ride the "NICE-Mini" buses for free until the end of this month.
Jonathan Feldman, NICE Bus director of planning and scheduling, says riders can download an app and hail a ride.
"We'll come pick you up right now or if you want to schedule a ride for later in the day, we'll pick you up at that time," Feldman says.
Feldman says they carry 50,000 to 60,000 passengers on their fixed route network every day, but there are still parts of Nassau that don't have enough transit service.
He says it's designed to make public transportation easier and more efficient.
The ride will then cost $2.75 - the same price as a normal bus ride.
The service runs between Merrick and Lynbrook along the Atlantic Avenue corridor
"NICE-Mini" buses seat 18 people and are wheelchair-accessible. NICE says unlike Uber and Lyft, there is no surge pricing.
