Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano gave himself a $17,000 raise in July, months before he was indicted on federal corruption charges.
The raise brings Mangano's annual pay to more than $191,000. That's more than Suffolk Executive Steve Bellone's annual pay and even more than Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
Mangano's administration confirms the county executive took the raise this past July after they say he went six years without an increase.
According to the Nassau County Interim Finance Authority, Nassau could be looking at a $100 million budget deficit next year. While NIFA officials wouldn't comment on this story, one former elected official says Mangano should have led by example.
"How does it look to the public when they're going to be asked to make sacrifices," said former Nassau Comptroller Howard Weitzman. "Services may have to be reduced or fees may have to go up. Then, you find a public official taking a big raise right in the middle of it."
Mangano, along with Oyster Bay Supervisor John Venditto, are accused of providing favors to a prominent Nassau restaurant owner in exchange for gifts.
