Outraged customers protested in Mineola Monday against a 26% rate hike by New York American Water.
Protesters shouted, "What do we want? Public water! When do we need it? Now!"
As News 12 has reported, more than 100,000 New York American Water customers will see their bills go up starting May 1. New York American Water is a private firm.
The state Senate has already approved a bill that would create the Nassau County Water Authority. That bill would grant all Nassau residents access to public water.
Demonstrators are now calling on the Assembly to pass the measure before the new hike goes into effect.
