Nassau County health officials are reporting the second confirmed case of measles in the county this year.
The patient is an unvaccinated man over the age of 50, and health officials say others may have been exposed.
Officials say the man visited several medical facilities last Thursday, including a medical building on Marcus Avenue in New Hyde Park and an NYU Langone facility on Froehlich Farm Boulevard in Woodbury.
He also visited two Northwell Health buildings on Northern Boulevard in Great Neck.
Dr. Luis Marcos, an infectious disease specialist at Stony Brook Medicine, says measles can spread easily, even after an infected person leaves an area.
“Let’s say I don’t have any symptoms and I have the measles, I can go to a bank, to a market, to a restaurant, spend one hour or so and then the virus can be there for almost two hours and affect anyone who is not vaccinated,” Marcos said.
The first confirmed measles case in Nassau County this year was reported in May, involving an unvaccinated child under the age of 5.
There have been no reported measles cases in Suffolk County this year.
Last week, Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency amid a rise in measles cases.
