Nassau is set to enter phase two Wednesday, County Executive Laura Curran explains “Our economy desperately needs help.”
Nassau officials announced that phase two for the county will begin on Wednesday, and they are hoping it jump starts more of the economy.
In phase two, retail, outdoor dining, office jobs, hair salons and real estate will be open.
“Our economy desperately needs help, we need to get our businesses moving again,” says Curran.
Officials say the latest sales tax receipts show a sobering number - a 30% decline.
“This is devastating, we need Washington to take action now and help with revenue recovery,” says Curran.
Curran says one way to get the sales tax back up is to move reopening of malls to phase two – currently it is in phase four.
Officials say they sent a letter to Gov. Andrew Cuomo advocating that malls be placed in phase two.
Meanwhile, Nassau has reported the lowest number of hospitalizations since the COVID-19 crisis began – with 153 patients currently in the hospital across the county.
In addition, the county saw 51 new cases since Sunday, and seven new deaths.
Lastly, Curran says she supports the residents who peacefully protested the death of George Floyd over the weekend and applauded the police for their professionalism.
“I am proud of our residents and proud of our police with handling the protests with professionalism, respect and calm,” says Curran.
