The red carpet rolled out for the stars of the music world as the MTV Video Music Awards returned to the City of Newark for the first time in three years.

It was one of music's biggest nights and some of the industry's biggest stars made their way to the Prudential Center for the VMAs.

From Lil' Nas X, one of the most nominated artists of the night, to Lizzo, hip hop legend Snoop Dogg, VMA cohost LL Kool Jay and DJ Khaled -- just a sample of the wide array of artists and personalities who turned out for the ceremony.

Some celebrities spoke to News 12 about why they were eager to attend.

"They paid us enough. They met our quote," Cheech Marin, of the comedic duo Cheech and Chong, joked.

"We're big [Red Hot] Chili Pepper fans and friends and when they asked us, we couldn't refuse," Chong added.

"I'm a fly on the wall at these events. I know my place," said host Nev Schulman, of "Catfish" fame.

"I'm super blessed, especially to see my name with the biggest people ever," said singer Nicky Youre, who was nominated for his song "Sunroof."

"It's really crazy. The evolution and the shift I feel, and I'm really excited to take it on the road," said singer Betty Who.

"This is a drama free date night for us if the VMAs are in our backyard in Jersey," said Melissa Gorga, of "The Real Housewives of New Jersey" fame, who was accompanied by husband Joe Gorga.

"I'm just to be here and be a part of history because there's always some moment that go down at the VMAs," added Justina Valentine, of "Wild N' Out."

The red carpet was a colorful night as the VMAs are also known for fashion as much as the music.

News 12's Carissa Lawson was also at the VMAs and shared a few posts from Twitter from the red carpet.

She was there along with many of the night's nominees and former winners, including Lizzo, LL Cool J and Snoop Dogg.
