The Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced Wednesday that sales of its iconic MetroCard will stop on Dec. 31, 2025.

The agency says it will be replaced with the “tap-and-go” system or OMNY cards.

“After 32 years, it’s time to say goodbye to the MetroCard and go all in on the fare payment system of the future,” said MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber in an MTA news release.

MetroCards will still be accepted through 2026, the MTA says. A final end date for their acceptance has not been announced.
