The NYPD says a police officer was among four people who were taken to the hospital after police shot a man who attacked them at the Sutter Avenue subway station in Brownsville Sunday afternoon.

The incident happened shortly after 3 p.m. on Sutter and Van Sinderen avenues, according to authorities.

The NYPD says two officers who were on patrol on the L line saw a man entering the station without paying a fare.

They followed the man and asked him to stop, but the man muttered that he would kill them if they did not stop following him, according to police.

The officers then discovered that the man had a knife and asked him to drop the weapon.

Detectives say the man then jumped into a train that had arrived and the officers demanded that he get off the train and go with them.

When he refused to cooperate, police say the officers used tasers on the man but they were ineffective.

Authorities say the man then jumped back onto the platform and rushed toward one officer with the knife, which prompted the officers to open fire.

Police say that as they subdued the man and performed lifesaving measures, one of the officers realized he was injured.

The officers then became aware that a woman and a man were hit by gunfire.

Other officers who responded to the scene administered aid to the injured police officer, the subject and the two injured civilians.

The NYPD says the injured officer was taken to Brookdale Hospital where he is expected to make a full recovery.

The FDNY says the three others were taken to Kings County Hospital.

As of Sunday night, authorities said the 37-year-old male suspect and a 49-year-old man were listed in critical condition, and a female civilian and the officer were in stable condition.

The NYPD says the man who was shot had a "significant arrest history" and mental illness.

The incident shook up New Yorkers as advocates called for more safety on trains and a roll back bail reform.

"We have cops being attacked being shot on the train, what does this say for public safety? We are at a crisis," said Charlton D'Souza, president of transit safety lobby group Passengers United.

D'Souza pointed to remarks from Mayor Eric Adams about the violent crimes that authorities say the suspect committed in the past.

"Our current laws in Albany, we have a lot of violent repeat offenders that our out here, and this is a crisis, and needs to be delt with," he said and called for more police at stations in the wake of the incident.
