Neighbors and business owners in Morris Heights have been struggling to cope following a massive fire last month.
A five-alarm fire broke out on Dec. 17 along University Avenue, resulting in the razing of four businesses.
Nearby residents who used to rely on the convenience of the shops now must trek to a supermarket three blocks away. This is especially difficult for Steven Conley, who is ill and disabled.
Conley says the walk to the supermarket is almost too strenuous to make sometimes, and hopes the construction to rebuild the shops is completed with haste.
Construction workers say that the sidewalk in front of the former strip of stores is expected to be repaired no later than this Wednesday. After that, the rebuilding process is expected to begin.
There is still no word on what exactly caused the fire.
