A man accused of shooting a Suffolk County police officer last week is now facing more charges.
Sheldon Leftenant has been charged with criminal possession of weapon in addition to aggravated attempted murder of a police officer and resisting arrest.
Leftenant was arrested in Huntington Station for allegedly shooting 12-year veteran officer Mark Collins twice following a traffic stop.
DA Thomas Spota says Collins successfully deployed his Taser twice into Leftenant's back. It brought Leftenant to the ground but did not completely immobilize him. As Collins was trying to handcuff Leftenant, the 22-year-old allegedly shot the officer in the neck and the hip.
Spota says Leftenant told officers after his arrest that he didn't care about a police officer being shot.
Collins was released from the hospital last weekend and is expected to make a full recovery.
Authorities say Leftenant is a member of a local gang known as the Tip Top Boyz.
