A Suffolk County teen finished in eighth place this weekend at the 22nd annual Tunnel To Towers 5K.
At just 14, Nicholas DiCaprio was the only Long Islander who placed in the top 10 among the 3,400 runners Sunday.
The race is held in honor of the people who died during 9/11.
“I was not expecting to get top 10,” DiCaprio says. “I was thinking maybe top 50, top 100, somewhere in that area so getting eight was a huge surprise to me. I was definitely really happy with it.”
DiCaprio also excels as a runner at Miller Place High School, where he is only one of two freshmen on the varsity cross country team.
He says he hopes to run more 5Ks and possibly a full marathon in the future.
The Miller Place teen says the Tunnel To Towers 5K was about more than just a race for him.
“It was definitely special to me,” DiCaprio says. “I sort of envisioned the towers there, looked at them and thought about it a lot.”
